The Skilled Managers project builds on the evidence from recent studies that demonstrate a clear link between conflict, wellbeing and productivity in the contexts of the UK (Carnegie UK Trust 2020; Saundry and Urwin 2021). The documented deficit in interpersonal skills and conflict management training among line managers across various organisations (CIPD 2012) is studied and addressed through designing a comprehensive intervention programme. This intervention is evaluated using a randomised control trial to examine its effect on securing higher levels of employee engagement and developing core competencies, among line managers, to foster improved working relationships through reducing conflicts.

The project is led by the University of Westminster and University of Sheffield, in partnership with the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).
